Jaycee Dugard

Jaycee Lee Dugard disappeared June 10, 1991 in South Lake Tahoe, California. She was 11 years old. It was found in August 2009 after living in captivity for 18 years in a sex maniac’s house.

The disappearance

The last time one saw her, she walked toward the school bus stop on Washoan Boulevard in his town of residence, South Lake Tahoe. She entered a gray car whose brand could not be defined.

A man and a woman were in the car. This is the woman who had forced Jaycee to enter. His father heard him screaming and wanted to take the car chase, but he was biking and saw them disappear very quickly.

The investigation

Two people were considered suspects in the abduction. Daveggio James Anthony and Michelle Lyn Michaud. Both were arrested and sentenced to death in 1997 for the abduction, rape and murder of Vanessa Lei Swanson, whose body was found near Jaycee Dugard’s home. They are currently in the death row.

In 2006, a neighbor calls the police saying that people are living in a tent in the garden of a house. One policeman went to the scene but did not bother looking in the tent or even enter the garden!

However the owner of the house is a man called Phillip Garrido, a sex offender already on file at the time.

The Warren County Sheriff Rupf, in light of recent events has apologized, and speaks with an inexplicable mistake by the policeman.

Garrido was under judicial review. Several times a month, inspectors came to see him!

The reappearance

Phillip Garrido is a religious fanatic. With his two daughters, he came on campus at Berkeley to distribute leaflets calling for a religious meeting.

They were noticed by two supervisors from the university. Ally Jacobs found that both girls have a strange way of walking, such as robots. One has a lump over one eye.

Lisa Campbell also notes the trio who distributes religious tracts. Garrido seemed to have an unstable and erratic conversation.

Ally Jacobs then she had a premonition.

I watched two young girls, one of which seemed merely looking at me intently with a fixed smile. The elder acted strangely refusing all contact with the authorities.

The girls said they are educated at home and they have an older sister.

Both supervisors carry out checks on Garrido’s papers and discovered that he is stuck as a sex offender. They contact his probation officer that sees something unusual, since he has no children.

Jaycee Dugard had two children, the first when she was 14 years,  Angel and Starlet are aged 11 and 15 years. Never reported to authorities, children were not attending school and have never seen a doctor.

The conversation convenes Garrido who came with three (supposed) daughters. All three are healthy. During interrogation, Jaycee Dugard reveals when she was abducted, and Garrido admits that he has kidnapped her.

Garrido

Phillip Garrido is 57 years. His wife, Nancy Garrido, 54 years old was also arrested, she is regarded as the woman who pushed the girl in the car.

He wanted to build a church. He distributed flyers to his neighbors or put them online on Internet. Indeed he has a blog on Blogger to present its ideas.

After his arrest following are examples of comments posted on his blog via the Internet:

“You can “think” that you hear God speak to you, but it is Satan at the other end of the wire. You are probably the craziest en sickest man  in the world.”

“I hope that you will never see daylight again.”

Homecoming

DNA tests were conducted on the three recovered people.

Jaycee Dugard found his parents and met his sister Shayna, who had one year when she disappeared. When she began to recall the details of his life in captivity, his father asked him to stop. It was beyond than he could bear.

Jaycee Dugard has been interviewed on October 15, 2009 by the People magazine and she said, smiling: “I’m so happy to be back with my family.” Her photo is not very different from the portrait done by computer.

Update: July 2, 2010:

A Californian judge, for the reason Jaycee Dugard and her child will need to be assisted for the rest of their live, granted her 20 000 000 dollars of compensation.

Update: June 2011:

Phillip and Nancy Garrido pleaded guilty in April 2011 for the charges of kidnapping and sexual assault. In June they have been sentenced 431 years for him and 36 years for her. They serve their sentences in two California prisons.

Update September 2011:

Jaycee Dugard, although she and her family have received compensation, sues the United States government because Garrido was not monitored after parole. The purpose of the trial is to draw attention to prevent this from happening again. This has little chance of success, however.
