The name "grog" comes from the word "Grogham" a kind of tissue of what
was done the mantle of Vice Admiral Edward Vernon and that's why he was nicknamed "Old Grog".
He is credited with the invention of the recipe:
he cutted the rum with water to reduce alcohol consumption of his sailors.
To rum and water it was in the habit of adding lemon that contains vitamin C to prevent scurvy, common in long voyages at the time (the grog was devised in 1740 by Vernon).
It is customary to give alcohol to victims of the cold, to activate blood circulation. Any hot liquid could have this effect. A good hot soup, prepared from a cube if you have no time to prepare the meal, would act as well, especially if you take drugs (migraine often accompanies angina), which should not be combined with alcohol.
Adding honey or cinnamon enhances the taste but adds nothing to the alleged virtues of grog. You can replace the honey with sugar, or suppress it.
